Building Shapes – Block Activity

Do you have a box of building blocks just sitting in the corner collecting dust? I know I did. Building blocks seem to be one of the first toys to lose their magic when new things enter the playroom. But what our kiddos don’t realize, is that the possibilities are endless when it comes to blocks.

Want a castle? A new home for your animals? How about a boat? A robot? A bed for your teddy bear? Or a small table and chairs for a tea party? You can create all of these things with blocks! Our littles just need to be reminded about the endless possibilities. So what do you do to reinvigorate that block bin?

You set up an activity, of course! And this shape building activity is perfect to get those sweet minds imagining again! The bonus? It’s super quick and easy to set up.

My kids love to build with blocks. They make all sorts of creative things, and then promptly knock them down, haha! but when kids stare at the same toy day after day, they tend to forget how amazing it can be. The same is true with blocks. My kids go through phases where all they want to do is build with blocks. Then, all of a sudden, they don’t want to touch them! When that happens, I make them exciting again by presenting them in a different way.

As soon as I put the painter’s tape down for this activity, the kids got excited. Painter’s tape isn’t something we use all of the time, so it automatically amps up the excitement of the activity. I chose to do 3 shapes that my littles are working to identify. You can make whatever shapes you would like to focus on with your kiddos. All I did was pull out the block bin and ask my littles to build the shapes!

While they build, ask them questions about each shape. “What shape is that? Can you think of something that is shaped like that? How many sides does it have?” Asking questions is an easy way to add some educational value to an activity.

The beautiful thing about this activity is that it is really two activities in one. They sit down and build the shapes while learning about them, and then it organically flows into imaginative play and building with the blocks! You can prompt them a bit with more questions like, “Do you think you could turn the square into a house? If we put your small animals in the middle of the triangle, does it look like a fence?” So many options here!

Personally, my loves built towers after the shapes and then knocked them down, of course. But the moral of the story is that the blocks are reinvigorated! So, grab yourself some painter’s tape and a box of building blocks and get your kiddos excited about them again!
