Looking for a quick and easy activity for your toddler or preschooler? Look no further than the dino color line!
We have a great set of colorful dinos and my kiddos just love to play with them. They end up in animal worlds, color sorts, and even smoothies in the play kitchen!

Materials
For this activity you only need a couple of items:
- Large paper roll (or large piece of paper)
- Sharpies in rainbow colors
- Colorful Dinos
Don’t have these dinos? No worries! Here are a couple of other options for you:
- Colorful Animals
- Counting Bears
- Pom Poms
- Gems
- Really, any object that has a variety of colors and your child can safely play with will do.
Set Up
Let’s get moving!
- Grab your paper roll and cut off a chunk that is 2-3 feet long. You can make this as large or as small as you’d like, but I find this size to be good for the Preschool age group.
- Pull out those sharpies and label the top, if you’d like. Call it whatever you want!
- Using your rainbow sharpies, draw at least 2 lines of each color in varying sizes. I tried to draw one long and one shorter per color, but you can do it however you’d like. *The reason I like to use different sized lines is so my little has to use a different amount of dinos to fill each line. It helps him think about how many will fit on each line as opposed to grabbing three of each color to fill each line.
- Place the colorful dinos in a basket or pile next to your paper.
- Invite your little over and show them what to do for 2 different lines. This allows them an opportunity to see you matching the dino color to the lines twice, which will help them understand that they need to use different colors.
- Sit back and watch as your little matches the colors, and has some imaginative fun along the way!
Enjoy!
This activity is perfect to teach those beginning skills that will be expected once your cutie is in school. Fine motor skills? CHECK! Color Identification? CHECK! Matching? CHECK! Imaginative Play? CHECK!
Look at that. 4 major skills and it took you less than 5 minutes to set up! That is my kind of activity.
While your kiddo matches and plays, you can enjoy a hot cup of coffee, read a few emails, or simply sit back and enjoy the magic. I love watching my kiddos do activities like this for 2 reasons.
- I’m able to assess what skills they have mastered and what we need more practice with.
- These little moments allow me to observe the pure heart, innocent nature and creative mind of a child.
We live in such a fast-paced world, that sometimes we forget to slow down and just observe. Stop, and just look at that beautiful life that you are raising. They grow so fast! I don’t want to look back and wonder where the time went and why I didn’t stop and just enjoy them being little.
Whether your kiddo matches the dinos on the correct lines or not, just enjoy these moments. They are so fleeting.
