Easy and Engaging Construction Sensory Bin for Kids

We love sensory bins in this house. I started them when my oldest was 3 and 6 years later, we are still doing them now that my 4th kiddo is 3! There is just something so satisfying about them having their own container full of things to explore and create. And the best part is that you can set a sensory bin up with almost any material! Here are some of our favorite bases and materials to use.

I have 4 boys and they all love to create and destroy. We have done colored rice bins, colored chickpea bins, dinosaur bins, flower bins, alphabet bins, cooking bins, and so many more! But, we had not done a construction bin yet. Since my 4th kiddo is especially into vehicles, I thought now was the perfect time to create a construction bin! Let’s check it out:

How To

This one is really quick and easy to set up:

  1. Grab your container and the dry beans
  2. Pour the beans in the bin
    • I placed mine in 3 different sections to create zones for initial play, but you can arrange yours however you want!
  3. Place wooden pieces in the bin on top of the beans
  4. Add construction vehicles and cups for pouring
  5. Invite your kiddo to come explore this awesome bin!

I like to do this bin outside, if possible. If we are inside, I always place a drop cloth underneath it to catch the loose beans from all of the scooping and dumping.

With these simple materials, my kids played for hours with this bin! And now that the beans are mixed, they still love to pull it out and play with it.

What I truly love about this bin, is that it allows for really beautiful sibling play. Of course, they argue occasionally. But, with all of the vehicles and materials, there is always some wonderful cooperative play that occurs.

Use a smaller tray and add rocks for individual play!

Enjoy!

This construction bin is just so fun. Even my 9-year-old still loves playing with it! You just need to add this to your sensory bin rotation. If you are new to sensory bins, check out how to get started here!
