Easy Outdoor Alphabet Art Activity for Kids

Buckle up for this one, because it is the perfect way to occupy not one, not two, but three or more kids simultaneously while enjoying the great outdoors. I know, right?!

Because we don’t get a whole lot of nice weather where we live, we just love being outside when it isn’t cold. The fresh air, the sunshine; it’s just good for the soul. When we do have nice weather, I like to take advantage of it with as many outdoor activities as possible. Sometimes that involves distracting the littles and changing up the activity. When everyone is hot and sweaty, I like to slow things down with a snack and something calming. Like this activity that we took outside this weekend.

The activity that I am going to talk you through today is a crowd favorite. It’s just so satisfying to use paint dotters. If you haven’t done so, do yourself a favor and try it out! It’s also a great way to paint in a more controlled setting for your messier littles. Let me show you what we do:

How To

This one is super simple to set up and you can change it up however you’d like!

  1. Grab your paper roll and markers
  2. Write out the alphabet in large letters spaced apart
    • I chose to change the colors for each letter to give a rainbow pattern as the kids were dotting
    • You can use capital or lowercase letters, depending on what you are working on with your kiddos
  3. Bring it outside and tape it down, using painter’s tape
  4. Grab the paint dotters and model how to dot along all of the lines of one letter with the matching paint color
  5. Let your kiddos go and paint dot away!

Enjoy!

This is such a fun one to enjoy with your kiddos. And what I love about it, is that all 4 of my kiddos can paint at the same time since it is so big! I like to pull this one out when the kids are hot and sweaty with a smoothie and a quick snack. It’s the perfect calm down on a warm day outside.

And not only does it re-energize us and allow for a little art time, but it teaches some important skills too! All of my kiddos are flexing those fine motor muscles, strengthening their fingers as they grip and control the paint dotter. They are also practicing following a line and matching colors. So many skills in such a quick set up! If your kiddo is past the alphabet stage, you can always write words for them to dot. The sky is the limit here!
