Easy Outdoor Collage for Kids

It’s summer baby! And I am taking every opportunity to be outside with my kiddos. One of our favorite ways to play, is by creating with chalk. Usually, we just free draw and the creations that they come up with are pretty neat!

However, this year, my sweet 3-year-old is ready to get in on the action. While he can certainly create with chalk, it tends to be a series of lines and scribbles, which is totally age appropriate!

To help him work on an all-important skill, coloring within the lines, and to give my older kiddos something artistic to work towards, we decided to make a collage! It’s really simple to do and was something that they kept coming back to while playing in the backyard.

How To

Here is how to get started on your masterpiece:

  1. Grab your painter’s tape and head outside
  2. Create a large box (or any other desired shape) as the border to your collage
  3. Using the tape, make a diagonal line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner
  4. Using smaller pieces of tape, make different angled lines from that center diagonal line to the borders
  5. Continue making lines until you are happy with the design

This can literally look like anything, it is not one size fits all. So have fun with it! If you have older kiddos, you can even let them do the inside taping once you have created the border. The sky is the limit here!

Now that you have created your base, grab the chalk and let your kiddos go to town!

Enjoy!

I let my kiddos have free reign with the colors and placement here. They had a great time coloring the sections in and deciding what color should come next.

It was super simple, and something that they kept coming back to while playing in the backyard. That’s one of the things that I love about chalk. You don’t have to finish it in one sitting. It’s a great activity to break up the day and give your kids another option while playing outside.
