My 3 year old is currently deep in letter exploration. We are specifically focusing on his name. There are so many different ways to explore letters, that it can be hard to choose sometimes! One thing is for sure, the more active my little jumping bean can be while learning, the better!
He is always on the go go go! It can be hard to sit him down and put pen to paper. He only recently started being able to sit still to do an entire puzzle, haha! That is why I opt for more involved and active letter activities with him. If he can move around and manipulate materials, there is a much greater chance that I will hold his attention!
That is where my painters tape comes in. Oh how I just love my painters tape! When someone mentions painters tape, my husband just rolls his eyes. I use so much of it, you’d think I painted houses for a living, haha!
But, seriously, if you don’t already use painters tape for kid’s activities, start doing it… like NOW. The stuff is magical! And go ahead and check out this post for some inspiration. You’re welcome in advance, wink, wink. Also, follow along on Instagram to see all of the awesome things we do with painters tape over there!
I digress. Back to the activity! Here is what you will need:

Materials:
- Painters tape
- Small cars
- Eager learner!
How To:
Grab that painters tape and find an open space on the floor.
Using the tape, create your child’s name. You will probably have to use a couple smaller pieces to form each letter instead of one continuous piece.
Set out a basket of small cars (Hot Wheels cars work great for this!) and invite your little to build!
Enjoy!
While your little is exploring, ask questions about the letters. ‘What is the first letter?’ ‘Which letter comes last?’ ‘What does this spell?’
Your cutie may not be able to answer every question quite yet, but each exposure will further that alphabet knowledge.
This activity is always such a hit with my littles. They just love building the letters over and over again.
The best part is that it often leads to independent play with the cars once they are done building their names. Aren’t those the best kinds of activities?
Thank you so much for reading, sweet friend. As always, you can find us over on Pinterest and see what we are up to on Instagram.
