Pattern Block Christmas Tree Activity

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I can hardly believe that it is already December! And with December comes Christmas decorating, cookie baking and a dramatic increase of indoor activities. I like indoor activities just as much as the next Mom! But when you are stuck inside all day because of bad weather, it’s essential that you are armed with fun and engaging indoor activities to keep your kiddos (and yourself!) entertained.

This Pattern Block Christmas Tree Activity was simple to put together and had my kids engaged over and over! Here is how to create your own:

Pattern blocks

Set Up

Go ahead and grab that box that just got shipped to your house (I have a pile of boxes saved for this very reason, haha!). If you don’t have a box lying around, I’m sure you’ll get one from that Cyber Monday shopping that you just finished 😉

Cut down one seam of your box to open it up completely. Depending on how big you want your tree, cut your box in half or in quarters. I cut my medium sized box in half.

Now, draw a Christmas tree outline on the ‘body’ of the box and trim off the excess flaps.

Add your pattern blocks and you are all set up!

Pattern Block Play

Invite your kiddos to decorate the Christmas tree with pattern blocks! This is a great time to discuss colors and shapes.

The best thing about this activity is that there is no right way to play. Younger toddlers might simply place shapes in a random arrangement on the tree. While older toddlers may try to create a pattern. It doesn’t really matter how they play with it, as long as they are engaged.

My 4 year old figured out how to create ornaments by combining the shapes and spent at least 30 minutes meticulously forming each ornament! My 2 year old tried to make ornaments for a while as well, and then moved on to decorating the tree with single shapes.

Regardless of how your kiddos play, they will be using their imaginations as well as practicing fine motor skills and shape/color recognition. And what is awesome about this activity is that you can do it over and over again! It’s a win win! What are your favorite winter indoor activities?
