The Best Number Monster Activity for Kids

I am all about creating activities for my littles. Even better when I can make them academic! This number monster activity checks those boxes and then some.

My kids love it when I let them use the googly eyes. They don’t even care what the activity is. As long as they get to grab, sort, and (sometimes) glue these eyes, they will literally put them on anything!

As I was brainstorming some quiet time activities to do during our summer naptimes, I came across my googly eye collection (and yes, at this point, it is basically a collection!). As soon as I saw them, I thought of a great way to incorporate them into our quiet bin. Monsters! But not just any monsters, no. I had to put a little bit of school into this activity. So, we added numbers. Let’s check them out!

How To

Grab your index cards and some markers. Draw a monster on each index card; get creative! It can look like anything! Just be sure to make the body space large enough for a few googly eyes to fit. In order to make them large enough, I chose a loose basic shape for each monster. I also used a different color for each monster, but you can do it however you would like.

Once your monsters are drawn, write a number on each index card. The number will correspond to the amount of googly eyes your kiddos should use. So, be sure to save the higher numbers for the monsters with more body space for eyes!

We don’t glue our eyes on the monsters, because we use the same cards over and over again. However, you can absolutely have your kiddo glue the correct number of eyes on each monster. It’s a great way to extend the activity!

***As you can probably tell from the photos, I printed the monster cards. When I first made this activity, I drew all of the monsters, but since we use them a lot I decided to step up my game and print the cards for long term use!

Modifications

For younger kiddos, stick to low numbers or simply draw the monsters and allow them to add the number of eyes they choose.

If you want to challenge your older kiddos, instead of writing numbers you can write math equations. Examples would be addition, subtraction, and even multiplication or division. Then your kiddo will need to do a little math before placing the googly eyes.

You can even omit the numbers all together and include dice. Then your kiddo can roll and add that number of eyes!

Looking to make this activity last a bit longer? No problem! As long as your kiddo is able (I would say ages 5 and up) simply write numbers on the cards and allow them to create their own monsters. You can always create one as an example so your little can see what to do.

Enjoy!
