A lot has changed with our Easter eggs over the past few years. My allergy kiddo has outgrown his egg allergy (woohoo!) so we can actually color and hunt for real eggs again! However, the kids enjoyed the plastic egg hunt so much; and since the Easter bunny fills the eggs, we just had to continue the new tradition!
When filling the eggs with a house full of toddlers, I had to be careful with how small the items inside were. They had to be small enough to fit in plastic eggs, but large enough to not fit into little mouths. Tough, right?!

Well, now that my baby is 3 and my oldest is 9, we have been able to move to more ‘big kid’ items. Thankfully, my 3 year old never really mouthed toys so we outgrew that stage quickly!
If you still have toddlers or your littles like to put things in their mouths, check out our list of Easter Egg Fillers perfect for the little ones!
Let’s talk about ‘big kid’ fillers:

Big Kid Easter Egg Fillers
- Lego Bricks
- Lego Minifigures
- Lego Animals
- These are not Lego brand, but we’ve found them to work well with our actual Legos.
- Lego Food
- Again, not Lego brand but my kids are obsessed with all of the food and play with it daily!
- Individual Stickers
- Squishies
- While I still have mixed feelings about these, my kids looooove squishies!
- Stamps
- Fidget Toys
- Resin Necklaces
- I make these and would definitely stash a few in some eggs if we had a daughter!
- Fun Erasers
- Tattoos
- Ear Buds
- My kids don’t use ear buds quite yet, but this would be great for the teens in your life!
- Lip Balm
- Bracelets
- Mini Flashlights
- Plus Plus Connectors
- Bath Bombs
- I love to use practical things that I was going to buy anyway. Bath bombs are a favorite in our house, so why not add them to the celebration?!
- Army Men
- Hot Wheels
- Hair Ties
- Scrunchies
- I am the only one who uses hair accessories in the house, but this would be a great addition for all the girls in your life!
- Pencil Sharpener
- Measuring Tape
- My kids are always trying to ‘borrow’ my mini measuring tape used for sewing. I thought the eggs were a great opportunity to gift them their own little measuring tapes! Obviously, steer clear on the traditional metal measuring tape as it could cut their little fingers. The sewing aisle is a great place to look!
- Shoelaces
- We all have to wear shoes, why not jazz them up with some fun laces?
- Socks
- Flower Seeds
- Every spring, we plant a garden. My kids love to watch things grow! I like to stick some ‘mystery seeds’ in the eggs with planting/care instructions. They don’t know what they are growing, and it is so fun to watch them take care of it and try to guess what it is!
- Money!
- This is obviously the winner of all winners. Who doesn’t love to get a few extra coins or dollar bills?!

Why DIY My Eggs When I Could Just Buy a Bag of Fillers?
I like to have a healthy mix of fun and practical when it comes to my egg fillers. And I’m going to be completely honest. I do not enjoy a house full of cheap plastic junk after each holiday. There are so many egg filler options on Amazon and at your local store, it would be easy to just snag a pack and call it a day. But I just can’t stand all of the cheap little junk that usually comes with those packs. Sure, those toys are fun for about a day. But then they end up under the couch or in the bottom of a drawer, forgotten about.
That is why I like to handpick what goes into our eggs. I want to find things that we probably would have bought anyway, or that I at least know my kids enjoy playing with.
Legos, Hot Wheels, Stickers, Plus Plus Connectors, Seeds, and Money are very common egg fillers for us. My boys get so excited when they open an egg and Legos spill out! They literally play with Legos for hours every day, so I know that they are not going to end up forgotten about.
Same with the Hot Wheels and Plus Plus Connectors. Yesterday, my kids actually created an entire Star Wars Fleet using only Plus Plus Connectors and played for hours. I kid you not!
And seeds? Well, those are consumable, so I know they’ll be out of the house for us to enjoy soon!
Money is always a winner, no matter how old your kid is (once they grow out of the mouthing stage, that is).
So, yes, you could just buy a bag of egg fillers from the store. And if that is what you choose to do, more power to you! I just like to personalize it to my kids so I know they are getting things that they will actually use and I’m not having to round them up to donate in a few weeks!

What is the Best Type of Egg Filler for My Kids?
The best egg fillers for your kids are the ones that they will go back to again and again. And don’t be afraid to get a little practical too. I don’t have a daughter, but if I did hair ties, scrunchies, jewelry, and nail polish would all be on the list. These are things that I use often and could always use a refresh on!
Think about your specific kids. What do they use and play with on a daily basis? Or what would you like to introduce them to (ear buds, maybe)? Anything small enough to fit into an egg.
If you have both boys and girls and want to add some gender specific items, put them in a single egg color. For instance, maybe put the girl specific items in the pink eggs and the boy specific items in the blue eggs.
You could then just let them collect and sort amongst themselves when they open everything, or you could assign them colors.
My kids would probably get suspicious that I planted the eggs if I told them which colors to grab, so maybe the Easter Bunny could leave a note?!
Fill Those Eggs!
However you do it, just have fun with it! Holidays are a special time when we get to slow down and spend time with the ones we love. So, fill those eggs and enjoy all of the smiles on Easter morning.
