Winter Snow Writing

Winter can be a very fun time for kids if you live somewhere with snow. But even snow can get old sometimes.

We are still in February and my littles are already asking when Spring is coming. They have had fun playing in the snow, but let’s face it…snow is cold! They would much rather be riding bikes or running around in t-shirts.

Even though it is cold, I think it is incredibly important for kids to get outside and play! So, once the snowball fights, sleds and snowmen get old, I pull out the simplest trick in the book…snow writing!

We were playing outside this afternoon and my kids were just bored. My oldest found a hard icy snow chunk that looked kind of like a dinosaur tooth and I had a light bulb moment!

We searched around for a few more and shaped them into giant teeth (or pencils!). I grabbed my middle kiddo and we wrote his name in the snow. The boys got so excited that they spent the rest of our time outside finding hard icy snow chunks and writing in the snow with them!

They wrote their names, drew pictures, and simply made lines (mostly my 2 year old). It didn’t really matter what they were writing. The point was that they were enjoying their time outside (and getting a little fine motor practice in)!

The best part about this activity is that it is completely free and requires absolutely no prep!

Materials

  • Cold weather gear for outside play (we love these mittens!)
  • Hard icy snow chunk (you could also use an icicle, but be careful with littles!)

How To

1. Send your kiddos on a snowy ice chunk hunt. You are looking for something that stays together when dropped. You want it to be pretty hard so you can write with it.

2. Using the ground (like a sidewalk or patio), the side of a brick house, or a rock, shape your snowy ice chunk! We chose to shape it into a dino tooth like shape.

3. Find a nice patch of snow and get writing!

You can always use an icicle instead, but be mindful with small children. They can be very sharp! As always, adult supervision is required with this activity.

Sit Back and Relax

This activity truly could not be easier. And it kept my kiddos engaged for so long! They just thought it was so fun to get to write in the snow.

And when they were tired of writing, they began collecting the icy ‘Dino teeth’ and went on a dinosaur hunt! The imaginations on these kids; I just love them!

Let’s keep winter interesting and help our littles explore the world around them. Get outside and snow write!
